Post-surgery rehab in Johor

The outpatient rehab phase shapes most of your long-term outcome.

This guide covers the pathway for each Johor hospital and surgery.

Why rehab matters most

Excellent surgery with poor rehab often produces a worse outcome than the reverse.

The muscle retraining and graded loading in the 3-6 months after surgery are where function is rebuilt.

Patients who shortcut this phase usually regret it.

Post-surgery physiotherapy pathway from hospital discharge to home rehab in Johor

Public vs private pathways

HSA Sultanah Aminah and HSI are the main public tertiary hospitals.

They have in-house physiotherapy with excellent clinical skill but high patient volume.

Private hospitals - KPJ, Regency, Columbia Asia, Gleneagles Medini - offer more session density at higher cost.

Many patients use one pathway for surgery and another for rehab.

FAQs

When should post-op physio start?
Depends on the procedure and your surgeon. Most upper-limb surgeries (rotator cuff, ACL) start rehab 2–6 weeks post-op. Knee/hip replacements often begin inpatient, immediately continued outpatient. Spine surgery varies 2–6 weeks based on procedure.
Who pays - the hospital, me, or insurance?
Inpatient physio is typically bundled with the surgery cost. Outpatient rehab is separate. Private health insurance usually covers it with a doctor's referral. SOCSO covers work-related procedures. Self-pay rates run RM120-250/session.
Will I need to travel between clinics and my surgeon?
Not typically. PhysioJohor coordinates with your discharge notes and surgeon's instructions. You only see your surgeon for scheduled follow-ups - rehab happens with the matched physio.
What about home-visit physio after major surgery?
Home-visit is often the best route for the first 6 to 12 weeks after a knee, hip or spine procedure. Travel into a clinic during that window can be painful or unsafe.
How do I make sure my surgeon and physio stay aligned?
We share a brief case note with the matched physio and ask for a short progress note before each surgical follow-up. You can forward those notes to your surgeon.
