How Many Physio Sessions Will I Need?
"How many sessions do I need?" is the question every patient asks at first visit, and the honest answer is "it depends on what's wrong".
That said, experienced physios see enough of each common diagnosis to give realistic ranges.
Below is what we see across our Johor caseload - not a guarantee, but a useful orientation.
Typical session ranges by condition
- Uncomplicated low back pain: 4–8 sessions over 4–8 weeks.
- Mechanical neck pain: 4–6 sessions over 4–6 weeks.
- Frozen shoulder: 12–20 sessions over 4–6 months - frozen shoulder is a long haul.
- Tennis / golfer's elbow: 6–10 sessions over 8–12 weeks.
- Rotator cuff tendinopathy: 8–12 sessions over 10–14 weeks.
- Plantar fasciitis: 6–10 sessions over 8–12 weeks.
- Achilles tendinopathy: 8–12 sessions over 12–16 weeks.
- Post-ACL reconstruction: 20–30+ sessions over 6–9 months.
- Post-knee / hip replacement: 12–20 sessions over 3–5 months.
- Post-rotator cuff repair: 20–30 sessions over 5–6 months.
- Stroke rehab: highly variable, often 6–12 months of regular sessions at declining frequency.
What changes these numbers
- Home-programme adherence. Patients who do the exercises as prescribed consistently need fewer sessions.
- Age and general fitness. A healthy 30-year-old recovers faster than a deconditioned 65-year-old.
- Severity. A Grade 1 ankle sprain is 3 sessions; a Grade 3 is 15.
- Comorbidities. Diabetes, inflammatory conditions, anxiety around movement all extend the course.
- Lifestyle. A desk worker with 10 hours of sitting heals a low back slower than someone who can modify their day.
When to reconsider
If you're 6 sessions in with no measurable change, that's a signal - either the diagnosis needs revisiting, or the approach needs to change, or another professional needs to be involved.
Not a signal to just keep going.
